A Warm Welcome from Rare Breeds Canada to Draft Horse Connection Subscribers
I wish to send a warm welcome to members of Draft Horse Connection from everyone at Rare Breeds Canada. I was very happy to learn about the proposed link between our two organizations, as it will provide great benefit to both groups. Already, some DHC members are also members of RBC and have multi-species interests. This natural occurrence will encourage interactions among all members creating new energies and flows of thought through shared ideas and past experiences.
The “New” Genesis magazine will be enlarged and maintain the high standard of excellence DHC members have come to expect, with Ruth’s finger on the pulse, overseeing the publication thanks to her experience, ability and professionalism.
Draft Horses have a special place inside me. My father was with the horse artillery during World War 1 in France. He was 16 years old and his place on the 6-horse gun team was closest to the gun limber, controlling the rear two horses, delivering shells to the gunners at break-neck speed under shell fire at night. He had lots of enthralling horse stories to tell. During World War 2 in London, draft horses were an everyday sight for me delivering beer, milk and working for the railways.
In Trinidad in the 1960’s, I worked as a disease specialist on a sugar cane plantation. Louisiana mules or water buffalo were used to haul cane from the fields. When my 4WD Land Rover became stuck in the thick mud in the wet season, a water buffalo, still attached to a cart, would easily pull me out. The large, sure-footed mules were often used on hilly terrain.
In Manitoba, on separate occasions, I have had the amazing experience of driving among large groups of Clydesdales, Percherons and Suffolk Punch, with foals at foot, under the watchful eye of a nearby stallion. It is then you get the full sense of how large, powerful, dignified and special these animals are. The challenge for an artist like myself is to try and capture these attributes on canvas in the studio!
Ruth has connected folks and their draft animals all across this great country. RBC is honoured and humbled to share this connection with likeminded folks through our joint magazine. RBC yearly memberships are $35 and include “Genesis” magazine, free classifieds on our website and in Genesis, plus a connection with a national network of heritage livestock producers. Display ad prices will remain the same as in DHC.
Once again, a warm welcome and thanks to you all. John Mills, Winnipeg. Rare Breeds Canada Chair.
Special Announcement From Draft Horse Connection
I have had an incredible journey the past 18 years of producing and publishing Draft Horse Connection magazine. The folks I have met all across Canada, each and everyone of you have enriched and blessed my life in ways you will never know. I have had the privilege of exploring this beautiful country that we live in from coast to coast all because of you my subscribers and my friends.
Now I am starting another journey, which is going to be the most difficult one facing me. In 2013 I had cancer. So I am very sad to say I will no longer be well enough to continue publishing Draft Horse Connection magazine.
Rare Breeds Canada publishes a magazine called Genesis. I feel this organization is a very compatible group who are keen on saving heritage farming practices.
The name, Draft Horse Connection will remain the property of Ruth Freeman as all our DVDs are copyrighted under this name. DVDs will still be sold by Ruth Freeman.
